State of the Surf

San Clemente has historically offered some of the best surf breaks in the world, yet a number of those breaks are deteriorating due to beach erosion and coastal armoring. With the World Surfing League (WSL) competition happening in San Clemente each year, the quality of the Trestles surf break and other excellent locations must not be compromised.

The dramatic loss of beach sand, particularly over the last decade, had significantly affected the quality of the sandbars at such breaks as State Park, Riviera, La Suen (Lost Winds) and others. In addition, hard armoring at the southern and northern beaches creates backwash refraction during higher tides that deteriorates the quality of waves at breaks such as Cottons and Mariposa, as well as Dana Strand just north of us.

The sections below outline conditions at our most significant surf breaks (scroll to see them all).

Bottom line: hard armoring must cease, and sand replenishment and retention strategies must be implemented as soon as possible.

To tackle this challenge, a growing community of concerned local surfers have banded together to work with our organization to help find solutions that will preserve our beaches for generations to come.
